アーケードの商店街にあり古い商家のようなたたずまいの平井商店。正面の大きな暖簾で隔てられた奥は、実は日本酒の仕込み蔵になっています。冬、酒造りのシーズンにお店に入ると、よい香りが漂ってきます。銘柄は「浅茅生（あさぢを）」といい、後水尾天皇の皇子・聖護院宮道寛親王から賜った和歌から命名されました。

創業は万治元年（1658年）。当時大津は琵琶湖の湖上交通の要衝であり、物流の中継地として栄えてきました。また「大津酒」という言葉があるほど酒造りも盛んでした。
それから350年余り、代々襲名してきた八兵衛の名前を継ぐ当主の平井さんは17代目、そして、娘 弘子さんが18代目です。平井さんは商社マンとして海外勤務を経験した後に家業を継ぐことを決意し、自ら杜氏の修行を始めました。今でこそ滋賀では珍しくない蔵元杜氏の先駆けともいえます。
